Little Pidurangula: the hike for a view of Lion Rock!

An alternative for Pidurangula Rock

During our trip through Sri Lanka, we discovered a hidden gem through a local tip that exceeded our expectations.
Little Pidurangula is an unknown and free alternative to the famous Pidurangula Rock, a rock offering a stunning view of the iconic Lion Rock.
The path is well-maintained by the locals, easy to follow, and within ten minutes, you’ll be at the top of a massive rock, surrounded by monkeys and breathtaking panoramic views. From the top of Little Pidurangula, you get the view of Lion Rock as seen in our photos.
When we were there, we were completely alone, which made it feel like a true hidden gem!

The Lion Rock or Pidurangala Rock?

On our Sri Lanka itinerary with our own TukTuk Sigiriya was our first stop. The Lion Rock is of course the highlight here. On day 1, we chose to climb the Lion Rock because we were really interested in the ruins at the top of the rock. The hike was manageable, and the gardens and the path leading up to it were truly beautiful. In hindsight, I’m glad we climbed the Lion Rock; it was an experience I definitely wouldn’t have wanted to miss.
My original plan was to visit Pidurangala Rock the next day, but then I received another tip from the owner of Lion’s Choice (a very friendly man with a great restaurant, highly recommended!). On the opposite side of Pidurangala Rock is ‘Little Pidurangala,’ a viewpoint that you can reach in just ten minutes. The view of Lion Rock from there is truly amazing. Since this spot is not very well known yet, it is also free to visit. When we were there, there was no one else, except for a few monkeys having fun at the top. This made it even more special. The path to the top is clear and is fairly well-maintained by the local people.

Where is Little Pidurangula Rock + Viewpoint?

Below on Google Maps, you can see roughly where Little Pidurangula is located. However, the path actually starts a little further back, around Mapagala Fortress.
From here, you can follow the signs upwards!

How doable is the hike to the top of Little Pidurangula?

The hike to the top of Little Pidurangula takes about 10-15 minutes. In certain sections, it is quite steep, and you’ll need to grab onto the ropes that are there. If you’re in good health, it’s manageable, and you don’t need exceptional fitness!

Note!

As mentioned, it was still free at the time (January 2024). The owner of Lion’s Choice did mention that they plan to charge for entry. The path is maintained by the local community, and effort is put into its upkeep. The local people could also really use the money. If you ask us, this hike is still worth it for just a few euros. Little Pidurangula remains a great alternative to Pidurangala Rock. The view you get is from the opposite side of Lion Rock, and the hike is shorter, which is also convenient if you have less time.

All in all, we highly recommend Little Pidurangula! It’s a great alternative to Pidurangula Rock, offering a beautiful view of Lion Rock from the other side. The hike is a bit shorter, and so far, it’s free.
